Correct Walking Posture

🧍 Body position

  • Stand upright (not stiff)

  • Head up, look forward (not down)

Arms

  • Bend elbows about 90°

  • Swing naturally forward and backward

  • Keep shoulders relaxed

Steps

  • Take comfortable, even steps

  • Land on heel first, then roll to toes

Breathing

  • Breathe naturally through the nose, mouth if needed

  • Maintain a steady rhythm

❌ Common Mistakes

  • Looking down constantly causes neck pain and poor balance

  • No arm movement leads to slower speed and instability

  • Slouching # reduces lung capacity → less oxygen intake

  • Overstriding (too long steps) can cause knee pain and fatigue

  • Stiff arms or swinging across the body wastes energy and affects balance

Special note (for the elderly)

  • Start slow, then increase speed gradually

  • Focus more on balance and safety than speed

  • Use support if needed (walking stick, companion)

Key:

1. Slouching is the act of sitting, standing, or walking in a lazy, drooping way, typically with the head bent forward and the shoulders hunched over. It conveys a sense of tiredness or boredom and is frequently associated with poor spinal alignment.

Slouching reduces lung capacity → less oxygen intake

How?

When a person slouches, the chest becomes compressed, and the lungs do not get enough space to expand fully. Because of this:

  • Breathing becomes shallower

  • Less air enters the lungs

  • Oxygen intake may decrease
